First we’ll give em a fair trial, then we’ll hang em

The all-Republican Loudoun Board of Supervisors, the beneficiaries of more than $67,000 in campaign contributions from the investors behind the proposed stadium at the One Loudoun development, were clearly caught off guard last fall by the groundswell of citizen opposition to the sweetheart deal for the stadium that they sprung on the public without warning last October.

From the outset it was blatantly obvious that the fix was in, though. The supervisors voted 9–0 with essentially no debate to give carte blanche top priority to the rezoning and special exemption request filed by the stadium developers. Chairman Scott York (R) and Supervisor Shawn Williams (R-Broad Run) attended community meetings alongside stadium execs to promote the stadium proposal, with Williams in particular doing yeomen PR spin duty by reassuring nearby residents that it will be an “intimate” stadium that will really not bother them. This despite the Planning Commission staff report which noted that plans for the stadium filed by the developers called for up to 10,000 seats for special events, regularly scheduled fireworks displays, and loud concerts and other special functions having nothing whatever to do with baseball that is supposedly what the stadium is for.

Supervisor Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin), trying to get into the act, goofily offered his constituents free fan gear for the extremely minor league and to date non-existent Loudoun Hounds baseball team that will supposedly play at the stadium (“If you, like me, think it will be great to have a local ball club to root for, contact my office for a free Loudoun Hounds bumper sticker,” said Geary, in no way prejudging the issue . . .)

Now with a final vote scheduled for March 25, the supervisors are trying very hard to act like they will judiciously consider the matter . . . before unanimously approving it, that is.

Learning from the master of corrupt politics himself

Delgaudio’s youthful protege Donny Ferguson

NOTE: broken link to the PBS story below now fixed.

Donny Ferguson, former aide to as yet unindicted Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling), is the subject of a fascinating investigative story by PBS Frontline showing how Donny has applied the lessons of dirty politics, smear campaigns, and dubiously legal fundraising pioneered by his mentor Delgaudio.

Donny, as many Loudoun residents know, is the mastermind of periodic sleazy robocalls which attempt to spread dirt on candidates just before an election. Because his “American Tradition Partnership” claims to be a “social welfare non-profit” organization, it is allowed only to “educate” voters on “issues,” not endorse candidates. It is illegal for such organizations to coordinate with campaigns.

During the supervisor elections in Loudoun last fall, Donny was however blatantly coordinating with the successful campaign of Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin), Continue reading

Metro Derangement (Investigation Division)

We’re back!

Students of Metro Derangement Disorder, the strange phenomenon that paralyzed our normally very unanimous unanimously Republican Loudoun Board of Supervisors, will recall the particularly acute form of the syndrome that afflicted Supervisor Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin) in the weeks leading up to the Board’s 5–4 vote approving the extension of Metrorail to Loudoun back in July.

At the last minute Higgins, who claimed to be very judicially undecided on the issue long after everyone else in the county knew he was planning to vote against it, joined with the truly indecisive Ken Reid (R-Leesburg) in issuing a lengthy set of conditions for his support, which included renegotiating the entire deal, putting off the  decision for another six months, requiring new action by the Virginia legislature, Fairfax County, the transit and airport boards, and the United States Congress, and suspension of the first two of Newton’s three laws of motion. Skeptical observers concluded he might just possibly be trying to torpedo the deal.

Anyway, as part of Higgins’s other not so subtle maneuvers to kill Metro, his office apparently committed a cardinal no-no and began sending out e-mails to the constituents of Supervisor Suzanne Volpe (R-Algonkian) insinuating Continue reading

Onward, Christian readers

What would our local Republican officials here in Loudoun County do without the resources of Purcellville’s Patrick Henry Bible College for Homeschooled Christians Who Subscribe to a Very Particular Statement of Biblical Literalism and Right-Wing Political Principles?

Supervisor Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin), apparently at a loss to find a qualified appointee from his own Catoctin District to name to the Library Board, luckily knew where to turn for help: his new appointee (who lives in Purcellville, not part of his district) is one Jackquelyn Veith . . . who just happens to be a senior administrator at Patrick Henry, though Geary did not bother mentioning that fact in his newsletter last week announcing the appointment. “I am so proud to be a loser”

And speaking of being businesslike . . .

I had thought that none of our usually very unanimous Loudoun Republican supervisors could outdo “Ken” Reid (R-Leesburg) when it comes to logically contorted reasoning, but Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin) is now showing that he can give even the best of them a run for their money. Continue reading
