Business-friendly hate groups?

Like the dogwoods that bloom in the spring, nutty utterances from Republican Loudoun supervisor Eugene Delgaudio are just part of the landscape here in Loudoun County; most of us have simply become so inured (or at least resigned) to them that we hardly notice it any more.

Loudoun GOP supervisor—and newly designated hate-group president–Eugene Delgaudio

So it’s useful every once in a while to be reminded how whacko it looks to the rest of the world, that a stalwart of the local Republican political machine runs a full-time business devoted to paranoid ravings about the “homosexual agenda.”

Delgaudio’s gay-bashing organization (modestly titled The Public Advocate of the United States) has now made national news after being designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors extremist groups across the nation. The local Democratic Committee is calling for Delgaudio’s resignation. Continue reading

We’re No. 47! (in ethics)

The exciting news that Virginia came in 47th among the 50 states in a recent survey of ethical standards in local government has special meaning for us here in Loudoun: We can all be proud that our new all-Republican Board of Supervisors did more than its part in acquiring for Virginia this distinction by refusing to adopt the ethics policy of its predecessors, by refusing to declare conflicts of interest, and by refusing to require supervisors to recuse themselves from voting on zoning or other issues that directly benefit campaign contributors.

The new slogan for Loudoun: “We’re Number 47!”

Mike Farris and the Lyme Disease quacks behind Loudoun’s “Initiative”

If you were puzzled as I was why the Loudoun Republican Party suddenly decided that it was up to them to save us from Lyme Disease, it turns out that the answer is in our own backyard: the moving force behind this odd business is none other than home-schooling and creationism-advocate (and politically well-connected Republican lawyer) Michael Farris, head of the unaccredited Bible college he founded in Purcellville for like-minded home-schooled Christians, Patrick Henry “College.”

Creationism advocate–Christian home-schooling proponent and now self-proclaimed Lyme Disease authority Michael Farris.

Tax cut pandering, budgetary reality

It’s easy to blather airily about Cutting Your Taxes when you’re running for office; it’s another matter when you’re actually responsible for things.

Loudoun schools continue to add 3,000 pupils a year, thanks to the pro-rampant-growth policies of previous Republican boards

Even our extremely fiscally conservative highly businesslike new all-GOP board of supervisors seems to have found themselves helplessly facing reality this week.

Despite arbitrarily vowing to cut tax rates 5 percent, the board has discovered —mirabile dictu—the following little facts that stand in the way. Continue reading

Amateur hour

SO, a mere 30 years after Federal health authorities identified the cause of Lyme disease and began a complete program of education, monitoring, and prevention, our very own top leading medical authorities here in Loudoun County—I am, of course, referring to newly elected Republican supervisors Professor Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin), Dr. Janet Clark MD (R-Blue Ridge), and Herr Doktor Doktor “Ken” Reid (R-Leesburg)—have swung into action with their own “10 Point Action Plan” to combat this terrible scourge, proclaiming 2012 “Lyme Disease Awareness Year.”

“This has been neglected way too long,” Reid declared in one of a series of self-congratulatory pronouncements he made to fellow board members Continue reading
